Nothing OS 5.0 Based on Android 17 to Be Unveiled Next Week: Expected Features

Nothing OS 5.0

Nothing OS 5.0 is set to be unveiled globally on August 25. The upcoming software update is expected to be based on Android 17 and could introduce new design elements, widgets, multitasking features and other Android 17 capabilities.

Nothing is preparing to unveil its next-generation Nothing OS 5.0 software next week. The London-based smartphone maker has confirmed that it will showcase the new operating system on August 25, giving users their first official look at the company’s Android 17-based software.

Nothing OS 5.0 is expected to bring a refreshed user interface alongside features introduced with Google’s latest Android release. However, Nothing has not yet confirmed the complete list of features or the stable rollout timeline.

Nothing OS 5.0 to Be Unveiled on August 25

Nothing announced the Nothing OS 5.0 unveiling through a post on X. The event is scheduled for August 25 at 11:00am BST (3:30pm IST).

The teaser shared by the company hints at some visual changes coming with the new software. These include redesigned icons and widgets, although Nothing has yet to provide detailed information about the changes.

The company is also expected to reveal details about its Nothing OS 5.0 beta programme during the announcement.

Nothing OS 5.0 Expected to Be Based on Android 17

The upcoming Nothing software is expected to be based on Android 17, Google’s latest mobile operating system. The stable Android 17 update has already started rolling out to compatible Google Pixel devices.

Nothing has not officially confirmed every Android 17 feature that will be included in Nothing OS 5.0. However, the update could combine Google’s new Android capabilities with Nothing’s own interface and customisation features.

The company is also expected to begin testing Nothing OS 5.0 through a beta programme before the stable version becomes widely available.

Which Nothing Phones Could Get Nothing OS 5.0?

Nothing has not yet published an official list of devices that will receive Nothing OS 5.0.

The recently launched Nothing Phone (4a) series could be among the early devices to receive the new software. The company’s flagship Nothing Phone (3) is also expected to be eligible for the update.

The exact rollout schedule, supported devices and beta availability are expected to be announced by Nothing during the upcoming event.

Android 17 Features That Could Come to Nothing OS 5.0

Since Nothing OS 5.0 is expected to be based on Android 17, some of the latest Android features could make their way to Nothing smartphones.

One of the notable additions is Bubbles, a multitasking feature that allows users to turn an app screen into a floating window by long-pressing the app icon. This could make switching between apps and handling multiple tasks more convenient.

Android 17 also introduces Screen Reactions, which allows users to record the smartphone’s screen while simultaneously recording themselves through the front-facing camera. The camera feed can then appear over the screen recording.

Whether these features will be available exactly as they appear on Google’s version of Android 17 remains to be seen, as Nothing may customise or modify certain elements for Nothing OS.

Nothing OS 5.0 Beta Programme Expected

Nothing is also expected to announce its Nothing OS 5.0 beta programme alongside the global unveiling.

The company has not confirmed when the first beta build will be released. It could initially be made available to selected devices and users before a broader rollout.

A stable release date has also not been announced yet.

Android 17 Adoption Expands

Nothing’s announcement comes as several Android smartphone manufacturers begin testing their Android 17-based software.

Google has already rolled out Android 17 to supported Pixel smartphones, including the Pixel 6 and newer models, as well as the Pixel Tablet.

Meanwhile, companies including Motorola, Oppo and Vivo have announced Android 17-based beta programmes for compatible devices. Vivo is testing its Android 17-based OriginOS 7, while Oppo has introduced its ColorOS 17 beta programme.

Nothing OS 5.0 will therefore mark the company’s next major step toward adopting Google’s latest Android platform.

What to Expect From Nothing OS 5.0

Nothing OS 5.0 could bring a combination of Android 17 features and Nothing’s own interface changes. Based on the teaser, users can expect changes to icons and widgets, while additional improvements may be revealed during the August 25 announcement.

For now, the exact list of supported devices, beta availability and stable rollout schedule remains unconfirmed. More information is expected when Nothing officially unveils Nothing OS 5.0 next week.
